Hepatitis B immunoglobulin is used to prevent infections of the liver known as hepatitis B (contagious liver infection caused by a virus from contaminated blood and body fluids).
This medicine helps prevent infections from developing in a person who had been exposed to hepatitis B virus (e.g. through skin pricks, cuts, or sexual contact).
It may be used for those who have not been vaccinated, have not responded to hepatitis B vaccination, or if you are having kidney dialysis while waiting for vaccination to be fully effective.
Hepatitis B immunoglobulin may also be used in babies whose mother has a hepatitis B infection.
Hepatitis B immunoglobulin injection is to be given intramuscularly (into the muscle).
Your doctor or nurse will administer the injection for you.
Ensure that you keep all appointments with your doctor so that you do not miss any doses. Your doctor also needs to regularly monitor your response to Hepatitis B immunoglobulin.
If you miss an appointment or miss an injection, alert your doctor or nurse. A replacement appointment or injection should be given as soon as possible.
Do not use Hepatitis B immunoglobulin if you ever had an allergic reaction (e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine or any of its ingredients.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- severe blood disorder or blood clotting problems
- allergies to other immunoglobulin
as Hepatitis B immunoglobulin may not be suitable for you.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Inform your doctor if you have been recently vaccinated. Do not receive any vaccinations without first asking your doctor.
If you are going to have a blood test, inform your doctor that you recently received this medicine.
Hepatitis B immunoglobulin may cause any of the following side effects: injection site reaction (e.g. pain, redness), headache, fever, chills, nausea and vomiting.
If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, inform your doctor immediately. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Avoid vaccinations during treatment or 3 months after treatment with Hepatitis B immunoglobulin.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in the refrigerator, between 2-8°C. Do not freeze Hepatitis B immunoglobulin otherwise it will no longer be effective and should not be used.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
