Trivalent influenza vaccine (split virion, inactivated)
Indications/Uses
Prevention of influenza disease caused by the 2 influenza A virus subtypes & the influenza B virus type contained in the vaccine for active immunisation of adults, including pregnant women, & childn ≥6 mth of age; & passive protection of infants from birth to <6 mth of age following vaccination of pregnant women.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM/SC Adult & childn 6 mth to 17 yr One dose of 0.5 mL. Childn <9 yr (not previously vaccinated) Give a 2nd dose of 0.5 mL after an interval of at least 4 wk. Infant from birth to <6 mth Passive protection w/ one dose of 0.5 mL given to pregnant women.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to trivalent flu vaccine or to any component that may be present as traces eg, eggs (ovalbumin, chicken proteins), neomycin, formaldehyde & octoxinol-9.
Special Precautions
Should not be administered intravascularly. Caution in case of an anaphylactic reaction following administration. Postpone vaccination in patients w/ acute febrile illness until fever is resolved. Administer w/ caution to subjects w/ thrombocytopenia or bleeding disorder. Syncope can occur as psychogenic response to needle inj. Ab response in patients w/ endogenous or iatrogenic immunosuppression may be insufficient. May not protect all vaccinees. Not all infants <6 mth of age born to women vaccinated during pregnancy will be protected by passive protection. Safety & efficacy of active immunisation have not been established in infants <6 mth of age.
Adverse Reactions
Inj site pain. Adult: Headache, myalgia, malaise. Elderly: Headache, myalgia. Adolescent & childn 9-17 yr: Myalgia, headache, malaise, shivering, inj site erythema, inj site swelling. Childn 3-8 yr: Malaise, inj site erythema, myalgia, headache, inj site swelling, inj site induration, shivering. Childn 24-35 mth: Inj site tenderness, fever, inj site erythema, malaise, myalgia, headache. Childn 6-23 mth: Inj site tenderness, fever, inj site erythema, irritability, abnormal crying, appetite lost, drowsiness, vomiting.
Drug Interactions
Use separate inj sites & separate syringes if given at the same time as other vaccines. Immunological response may be reduced if patient is undergoing immunosuppressant treatment.
