Indications and Dosage
Topical/Cutaneous
Skin irritation
Adult: For symptomatic relief of skin irritation associated with insect bites and stings, and nettle rash: As 2% w/w cream: Apply directly onto the affected area(s) 2-3 times daily for up to 3 days.
Child: >2 years Same as adult dose.
Contraindications
Application to eczematous skin conditions, sunburned skin, or skin with extensively broken, cut, or grazed surfaces and on large areas of the skin.
Special Precautions
Children. Pregnancy and lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Significant: Rarely, skin sensitisation.
Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders: Allergic skin reaction.
Patient Counseling Information
This drug may occasionally cause somnolence and mild disorientation, if affected, do not drive or operate machinery.
Action
Description:
Mechanism of Action: Mepyramine, an ethylenediamine derivative, is an antihistamine with antipruritic, sedative, and local analgesic properties. It blocks the binding of histamine on H1-receptor sites thus inhibiting the effect of histamine in the body.
Synonym(s): Pyrilamine.
